pointCandoglia is the first village you come across as you continue from Mergozzo towards Domodossola. Candoglia(Canduja in Ossola dialect) is a small cluster of houses squeezed between the mountain and the river. This hamlet is home to the marble quarry donated by the Sforza family to the venerable Fabbrica del Duomo as a civic benefaction; the Milan Cathedral was in fact built with the pink marble of Candoglia. To this day, the quarries are still owned by the Fabbrica, which uses them for the continuous restoration and renovation work necessary for the Duomo. The old core of the village is in fact located around the service structures of the quarries, from where the road up the mountain starts. There are two churches in Candoglia: San Graziano, the patron saint of Candoglia, now incorporated among the more recent houses in the village, dating back to the 12th century, and Sant’Andrea, still nestling in the woods not far from the village.
