San Maurizio d’Opaglio is known for being the heart of the industrial district of the tap, with numerous and historic companies in the sector.
The municipality of San Maurizio d’Opaglio was founded with the establishment of the parish in 1568, from the union of the ancient villages of Briallo, Lagna and Opaglio. The town was defended by a castle, destroyed in 1311 by the Ghibellines of Novara.
The start of the industrial extraction of the white granite quarries at Alzo di Pella in the mid-nineteenth century brought a large number of sammauriziesi to work in the quarry as stonemasons. The mining activity grew until the First World War, and then began a slow decline, accelerated after 1945.
Around 1920 the first tap’s factory was installed in the village, soon followed by other laboratories. After the Second World War, the tap industry encountered a phase of strong growth that led this town to be the Italian capital of the tap for the number of companies operating in the taps and valves sector.
